Chief Tim Lentz, Chief of Police, City of Covington
Tim Lentz grew up in Mandeville but now calls Covington his home. He started his law enforcement career at the young age of 20 patrolling the streets of western St. Tammany Parish for the Sheriff’s Office. He proceeded through the ranks of the Sheriff’s Office holding such titles as Detective, Fleet Manager, Patrol Supervisor, Asset Forfeiture Director, Commander of the Narcotics Division, Crime Lab Director, Captain over Detective Division, Patrol Commander, Deputy Chief, and in 2011 Sheriff Strain promoted Tim to Chief Deputy, the highest ranking position at the Sheriff’s Office. Up until his retirement in 2013, Tim oversaw the day to day operations of the Sheriff’s Office, with 750 employees and a 60 million dollar budget.
Upon his retirement in 2013 from the Sheriff’s Office, Tim was one of 16 people who applied for the Chief of Police for the City of Covington. After going through an exhaustive process, in October of 2013, Mayor Mike Cooper selected Tim as his new Chief of Police.
Tim is a graduate of the prestigious FBI National Academy in Quantico Virginia. He also holds an undergraduate and master of criminal justice degrees from Loyola University, where he also serves as an adjunct professor of criminal justice. Tim currently sits on the boards of directors for the Children’s Advocacy Center and Habitat for Humanity. He is an advisory board member of STOPS (St. Tammany Outreach for the Prevention of Suicide). He has previously served a variety of other community boards ranging from the YMCA, United Way, and St. Peter’s School Board, just to name a few.
He is married for the last 20 years to Suzanne and they have two beautiful daughters, Alex and Sydney that attend SSA.
